“Amy”, the story of a tragic destiny

The documentary about the life of the singer Amy Winehouse, who passed away in 2011, was released on the 8th of July. 4 years after her death, Amy lets us discover the private life and career of a unique artist killed by the fame.

Homage to Amy Winehouse

Produced by Asif Kapadia, the documentary Amy shows the evolution of Amy Winehouse’s carreer and destiny. From when she sang as a teen going onto singing in bars and clubs, to her love story and global success. The public is invited to the private life of the young British singer who became such an immense star but left us too soon.

Asif Kapadia built it like a real story and used archived footage, private and official images as well as interviews with her close friends and family. It highlights the whole singer’s life and sees an insightful glimpse into the relations she had with her relatives, best friends, co-workers, ex-husband (Blake Fielder-Civil) or her bodyguard (Andrew Morris).

The story of Amy could easily be the stuff of a fiction movie. Asif Kapadia made an amazing work with writing, research, montage and audio accompaniment. The movie is a true homage to the singer who died to the age of 27, on the 23rd July 2011.

Fatally famous

Amy Winehouse began her chart success with her first album Franck, released in 2003, which was followed by the outstanding album Back to Black, she wrote after breaking up with Blake Fielder-Civil. This second album made her world faous when she was just 23 due to her originality and heart felt emotions expressed through song.

However Amy became increasingly ill at ease with her fame when the paparazzi started to harass her in 2006. She had her own questions about whether she could handle the fame and thought she would go mad from being in the limelight. The increasing media presence in the songstress’ life put her under unbelievable strain.

Asif Kapadia’s work touchingly salutes the Rehab interpret, whose incredible talent we will never forget.
